01 — Overview
Many pet owners spend hours away from home wondering the same thing: is everything okay? This project explores how smart home technology can reduce uncertainty and provide peace of mind through a simple mobile experience.
02 — The Problem
Why do pet owners feel helpless when they’re not home?
Owners care deeply about their pets, but have very little visibility into what happens throughout the day. The lack of information often creates uncertainty, even when everything is perfectly fine.
03 — Research
Before designing solutions, I wanted to better understand the challenges pet owners experience when they’re away from home. I conducted 5 interviews with pet owners to explore their concerns and expectations.
01
Understand the biggest concerns pet owners experience when leaving their pets home alone.
02
Identify which information and features would provide the most reassurance while away.
04 — Insights
Pet owners weren’t looking for more features. They were looking for peace of mind.
Food & Water Management
People put more food and water when going out but have no solution to refill and no idea if the pet ate the food.
Climate & Light Control
Another concern was the climate and light control that is impossible to manage on the go because owners don't know the needs at the moment.
Guilt & Worry
People report about worries and feelings of guilt because most of the time the pet is home alone and they have no information about what's going on.
Safety Concerns
A major concern was the fear that the pet will get hurt or destroy something in the house and they will not know about it.
05 — Features

06— Design Approach
Visibility, monitoring, and control
The experience was designed around three core needs that emerged from the research: visibility into what is happening at home, monitoring important routines, and maintaining control while away.
- Home Screen
The home screen brings together the information owners want to access most often in a single place.

2. Food Management
Research revealed that owners wanted reassurance that feeding schedules were working as expected.

3. Scheduling
The scheduling flow was designed to make recurring feeding routines simple to manage.

07 — design
The final design combines monitoring, feeding, safety, and daily care into a single experience focused on helping owners quickly understand how their pet is doing and take action when needed.

08 — What I Learned
This project taught me that users don’t always want more information. In many cases, what they really want is confidence that everything is okay.
Understanding the emotional side of the problem helped shape the solution far more than any individual feature.
